How to Hang Your Dress Pants (So They Don’t Fall Off the Hanger)

The steps are required to hang dress pants on a hanger illustration.

After a long day at the office, you hang your dress pants up (maintaining that razor sharp crease, of course), and turn off the closet light. The next morning when you open the closet door, you find your perfectly hung pants lying in a lump on the floor.

There are speciality hangers out there that’ll prevent this kind of pant-slippage, but they’re not necessary if you use this handy dandy hanging trick. Employed by tailors around the world, the sartorial hack illustrated above will ensure that your nicely ironed dress pants never again slide off the hanger.

  1. Grab a pant leg in each hand by the hem. Be sure to maintain the crease. Straddle the hanger with the pant legs.
  2. Fold one leg through the hanger, letting the bottom hem hang about one inch above the crotch. Pinch the fold together with one hand.
  3. With your other hand, fold the other pant leg over the first and through the hanger in the opposite direction.
  4. Straighten the pants out, making sure the creases line up. Your pants won’t fall off the hanger anymore.
