Cool Uncle Tricks: “Walk the Dog” With a Yo-Yo

Comic guide to walk the dog with a Yo-Yo.

An essential part of being an awesome uncle is having a repertoire of tricks and jokes that will amaze your nieces and nephews, and crack them up. So from time to time we’ll be offering you current and future uncles out there a tutorial on some gags that’ll have them thinking you’re the coolest dude in the world. Check out all our Cool Uncle Tricks.

Almost everyone receives a yo-yo at some point in their youth. And, with Christmas just around the corner, it stands to reason that one of your nieces or nephews will end up with this classic toy (which dates all the way back to ancient Greece!) tucked inside a stocking. As a cool uncle, it’s your job to teach them a trick or two that they can do with it (besides letting it roll up and down).

“Walking the dog” is one of the most quintessential yo-yo tricks around. It’s fairly easy to do compared to some more advanced yo-yo tricks, but mastering it does require some prerequisite skills, which means you’ll have to teach your proteges a few basics first. Namely, how to throw a sleeper. Throwing a sleeper means getting the yo-yo to spin freely at the end of the string, instead of returning to your hand. It’s the first step to learning how to walk the dog. The harder and cleaner your sleeper throw, the easier it is to walk the dog.
