How to Throw a Devastating Left Hook Punch: An Illustrated Guide

How to throw left Hook Boxing punch illustration.

The left hook has been called the “prettiest” punch in boxing due to its precision and technicality. A well-placed hook to the head can knock a man out, and one delivered to the kidneys or liver will bring the strongest of brawlers to their knees.

Today allow John L. Sullivan to show you how to throw a devastating left hook. (Note: If you’re a southpaw, just reverse the hands on the instructions.) For a refresher on how to throw a straight punch, see our illustrated guide.

  1. The traditional way to set up a left hook is to begin with a right cross. (See “How to throw a dynamite straight punch”)
  2. Keep knees bent. Pivot your front foot, like you’re squishing a bug. Transfer your weight into your right heel. At the same time, twist your torso.
  3. Aim for the chain or temple for knock out punch or for the kidneys or liver for a devastating body shot.
  4. Stop your punch before it over-rotates so you don’t get countered. Don’t just swing the punch all the way through.
