\nThe bag-kneed trousers and the seedy coat.
\nPick flaws; find fault; forget the man is you,
\nAnd strive to make your estimate ring true.
\nConfront yourself and look you in the eye-
\nJust stand aside and watch yourself go by.<\/p>\n
Interpret all your motives just as though
\nYou looked on one whose aims you did not know.
\nLet undisguised contempt surge through you when
\nYou see you shirk, O commonest of men!
\nDespise your cowardice; condemn whate’er
\nYou note of falseness in you anywhere.
\nDefend not one defect that shames your eye-
\nJust stand aside and watch yourself go by.<\/p>\n
And then, with eyes unveiled to what you loathe,
\nTo sins that with sweet charity you’d clothe,
\nBack to your self-walled tenement you’ll go
\nWith tolerance for all who dwell below.
\nThe faults of others then will dwarf and shrink,
\nLove’s chain grows stronger by one mighty link,
