It\u2019s not enough to just have a great truck and a great trailer. You need to know how to properly use them first.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s to that end that we\u2019ve consulted a few experts in the field to put together this: a critical step-by-step guide to towing a trailer. Do<\/em> try this at home.<\/p>\n

Know Your Towing Capacity<\/h3>\n

Like with anything in life, it\u2019s important to understand your limits. In this case, before you connect a trailer to your truck, you\u2019ll need to know your truck\u2019s GCWR, or gross combination weight rating. This will tell you the maximum allowable combined mass of your truck, passengers and cargo in the tow vehicle, plus the mass of the trailer and the cargo in the trailer. Relax, it\u2019s a lot less math-y than it sounds. Just consult your truck\u2019s manual for the necessary specifications.<\/p>\n

Align Your Truck and Your Trailer<\/h3>\n

Slow and steady is the key here. Try to center your truck with your trailer before backing up. This step is made infinitely easier if your vehicle has a rear-vision camera built into the console. If not, having a spotter to assist is a wise idea.<\/p>\n

The good old ball hitch mounted to a draw bar or step bumper is ideal for light to medium loads. Heavier trailer-ing will require a weight-distribution hitch, which will distribute some of the weight up front. Large travel trailers and horse trailers might need a fifth wheel or gooseneck hitch.<\/p>\n

Unite Truck to Trailer<\/h3>\n

When using the ball hitch or weight-distribution hitch, you\u2019ll elevate the trailer with a tongue jack until it matches up to your truck\u2019s hitch platform. Keeping your hitch unlocked, you\u2019ll then lower the trailer onto the ball. Use a padlock or coupler safety pin to secure the tongue in place.<\/p>\n

Chain It Up<\/h3>\n

Always attach safety chains between your vehicle and your trailer. You\u2019ll want to cross them under the tongue of the trailer as a precaution in the event that the hitch gets separated. Should this happen, you will have increased the chance that the trailer doesn\u2019t drag. And that\u2019s a good thing. Oh, important tip: make sure to leave enough slack in the chains so you can corner in your truck without impeding the movement of the trailer. <\/strong><\/p>\n

Let There Be Lights<\/h3>\n

Your next move is to make sure your trailer displays your truck\u2019s turn signals and brake lights. Most newer trucks, including the 2016 GMC Sierra, come with a \u201cplug and play\u201d system that will allow you to directly connect the wiring harness from the trailer to the truck. Simple. Easy. Weigh Your Hitch<\/h3>\n
