Seton said he gathered these maxims on American Indian hospitality &#8220;chiefly from observations <span class=\"gstxt_hlt\">of <\/span>actual practice, but in many cases from formal precept.&#8221; They&#8217;re still largely&nbsp;apropo<\/em><em>&nbsp;<\/em>for modern hosts&nbsp;entertaining&nbsp;visiting&nbsp;guests in their &#8220;teepee&#8221; (though your mother-in-law may disagree).<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"gtxt_body\">Teepee Etiquette \u2014 <span class=\"gstxt_hlt\">The Unwritten Law of the Lodge<\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"gtxt_body\">Be hospitable.<\/p>\n<p class=\"gtxt_body\">Always assume that your guest is tired, cold, <span class=\"gstxt_hlt\">and <\/span>hungry.<\/p>\n<p class=\"gtxt_body\">Always give your guest <span class=\"gstxt_hlt\">the <\/span>place <span class=\"gstxt_hlt\">of <\/span>honor in <span class=\"gstxt_hlt\">the <\/span>lodge, <span class=\"gstxt_hlt\">and <\/span>at <span class=\"gstxt_hlt\">the <\/span>feast, <span class=\"gstxt_hlt\">and <\/span>serve him in reasonable ways.<\/p>\n<p class=\"gtxt_body\">Never sit while your guest stands.<\/p>\n<p class=\"gtxt_body\">Go hungry rather than stint your guest.<\/p>\n<p class=\"gtxt_body\">If your guest refuses certain food, say nothing; he may be under vow.<\/p>\n<p class=\"gtxt_body\">Protect your guest as one <span class=\"gstxt_hlt\">of the <\/span>family; feed his horse.<\/p>\n<p class=\"gtxt_body\">Do not trouble your guest with many questions about himself; he will tell you what he wishes you to know.<\/p>\n<p class=\"gtxt_body\">In another man&#8217;s lodge follow his customs, not your own.<\/p>\n<p class=\"gtxt_body\">Never worry your host with your troubles.<\/p>\n<p class=\"gtxt_body\">Always repay calls <span class=\"gstxt_hlt\">of <\/span>courtesy; do not delay.<\/p>\n<p class=\"gtxt_body\">Give your host a little present on leaving; little presents are little courtesies <span class=\"gstxt_hlt\">and <\/span>never give offense.<\/p>\n<p class=\"gtxt_body\">Say &#8220;Thank you&#8221; for every gift, however small.<\/p>\n<p class=\"gtxt_body\">Compliment your host, even if you strain <span class=\"gstxt_hlt\">the <\/span>facts to do so.<\/p>\n<p class=\"gtxt_body gtxt_lineated\">Never walk between persons talking.<\/p>\n<p class=\"gtxt_body gtxt_lineated\">Never interrupt persons talking.<\/p>\n<p class=\"gtxt_body\">Let not <span class=\"gstxt_hlt\">the <\/span>young speak among those much older, unless asked.<\/p>\n<p class=\"gtxt_body\">Always give place to your seniors in entering or leaving <span class=\"gstxt_hlt\">the <\/span>lodge; or anywhere.<\/p>\n<p class=\"gtxt_body\">Never sit while your seniors stand.<\/p>\n<p class=\"gtxt_body\">Never force your conversation on any one.<\/p>\n<p class=\"gtxt_body\">Speak softly, especially before your elders, or in presence <span class=\"gstxt_hlt\">of <\/span>strangers.<\/p>\n<p class=\"gtxt_body\">Never come between any one <span class=\"gstxt_hlt\">and the <\/span>fire.<\/p>\n<p class=\"gtxt_body\">Do not stare at strangers; drop your eyes if they stare hard at you; <span class=\"gstxt_hlt\">and <\/span>this, above all, for women.<\/p>\n<p class=\"gtxt_body\"><span class=\"gstxt_hlt\">The <\/span>women <span class=\"gstxt_hlt\">of the <\/span>lodge are <span class=\"gstxt_hlt\">the <\/span>keepers <span class=\"gstxt_hlt\">of the <\/span>fire, but <span class=\"gstxt_hlt\">the <\/span>men should help with <span class=\"gstxt_hlt\">the <\/span>heavier sticks.<\/p>\n<p class=\"gtxt_body\">Always give a word or sign <span class=\"gstxt_hlt\">of <\/span>salute when meeting or passing a friend, or even a stranger, if in a lonely place.<\/p>\n<p class=\"gtxt_body\">Do not talk to your mother-in-law at any time, or let her talk to you.<\/p>\n<p class=\"gtxt_body\">Be kind.<\/p>\n<p class=\"gtxt_body\">Show respect to all men, but grovel to none.<\/p>\n<p class=\"gtxt_body\">Let silence be your motto till duty bids you speak.<\/p>\n<p class=\"gtxt_body\">Thank <span class=\"gstxt_hlt\">the <\/span>Great Spirit for each meal.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Editor&#8217;s note: The following excerpt on &#8220;Teepee&nbsp;Etiquette &#8212; The Unwritten Law of the Lodge,&#8221; was taken from The Book of Woodcraft and Indian Lore (1912) by Ernest Thompson Seton.
