He was a man greatly respected for his ethics by both his&nbsp;tribe and their British neighbors. These are his teachings, as recorded by Ernest Thompson Seton.<\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"gtxt_body\">In <span class=\"gstxt_hlt\">the <\/span>day <span class=\"gstxt_hlt\">of <\/span>his strength no man is fat. Fat is good in a beast, but in a man it is disease <span class=\"gstxt_hlt\">and <\/span>comes only <span class=\"gstxt_hlt\">of <\/span>an evil life.<\/p>\n<p class=\"gtxt_body\">No man will eat three times each sun if he would keep his body strong <span class=\"gstxt_hlt\">and <\/span>his mind unclouded.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"flow\">\n<div class=\"gtxt_body\">\n<p class=\"gtxt_body\">If you would purify your heart <span class=\"gstxt_hlt\">and <\/span>so see clearer <span class=\"gstxt_hlt\">the <\/span>way <span class=\"gstxt_hlt\">of the <\/span>Great Spirit, touch no food for two days or more, according to your strength. For thereby your spirit hath mastery over <span class=\"gstxt_hlt\">the <\/span>body <span class=\"gstxt_hlt\">and the <\/span>body is purged.<\/p>\n<p class=\"gtxt_body\">Touch not <span class=\"gstxt_hlt\">the <\/span>poisonous firewater that makes wise men turn fools. Neither touch food nor taste drink that robs <span class=\"gstxt_hlt\">the <\/span>body <span class=\"gstxt_hlt\">of <\/span>its power or <span class=\"gstxt_hlt\">the <\/span>spirit.<\/p>\n<p class=\"gtxt_body\">Guard your tongue in youth, <span class=\"gstxt_hlt\">and <\/span>in age you may mature a thought that will be <span class=\"gstxt_hlt\">of <\/span>service to your people.<\/p>\n<p class=\"gtxt_body\">Praise God when you rise, when you bathe, when you eat, when you meet your friends <span class=\"gstxt_hlt\">and <\/span>for all good happenings. <span class=\"gstxt_hlt\">And <\/span>if so be you see no cause for praise <span class=\"gstxt_hlt\">the <\/span>fault is in yourself.<\/p>\n<p class=\"gtxt_body\">A proven Minisino [warrior] is at all times clean, courteous <span class=\"gstxt_hlt\">and <\/span>master <span class=\"gstxt_hlt\">of <\/span>himself.<\/p>\n<p class=\"gtxt_body\"><span class=\"gstxt_hlt\">The <\/span>wise man will not hurt his mind for <span class=\"gstxt_hlt\">the <\/span>passing pleasure <span class=\"gstxt_hlt\">of the <\/span>body.<\/p>\n<p class=\"gtxt_body\">If any man be given over to sex appetite he is harboring a rattlesnake, whose sting is rottenness <span class=\"gstxt_hlt\">and <\/span>sure death.<\/p>\n<p class=\"gtxt_body\">By prayer <span class=\"gstxt_hlt\">and <\/span>fasting <span class=\"gstxt_hlt\">and <\/span>fixed purpose you can rule your own spirit, <span class=\"gstxt_hlt\">and <\/span>so have power over all those about you.<\/p>\n<p class=\"gtxt_body\">Bathe every sun in cold water <span class=\"gstxt_hlt\">and <\/span>one sun in seven enter <span class=\"gstxt_hlt\">the <\/span>sweat lodge.<\/p>\n<p class=\"gtxt_body\">When your time comes to die, sing your death song <span class=\"gstxt_hlt\">and <\/span>die pleasantly, not like <span class=\"gstxt_hlt\">the <\/span>white men whose hearts are ever filled with <span class=\"gstxt_hlt\">the <\/span>fear <span class=\"gstxt_hlt\">of <\/span>death, so when their time comes, they weep <span class=\"gstxt_hlt\">and <\/span>wail <span class=\"gstxt_hlt\">and <\/span>pray for a little more time so they may live their lives over again in a different manner.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Editor&#8217;s Note: Wabasha &#8212;&nbsp;or&nbsp;Wapasha &#8212; I (1718-1806) was a American Indian warrior and the chief of a band of Santee Sioux who resided in Minnesota.
