Whenever the subject of marriage gets brought up, you can be sure that someone will argue against the institution by trotting out the most famous of famous statistics: half of marriages end in divorce. This seems like a slam dunk factoid as to why folks should avoid the altar.<\/p>\n
There’s just one problem: it isn’t true and hasn’t been for awhile now.<\/p>\n
Divorce rates have in fact been declining for a few decades and marriages are stronger than they’ve been in quite sometime. Here are some quotes\/statistics from The New York Times<\/a><\/em>:<\/p>\n The divorce rate peaked in the 1970s and early 1980s and has been declining for the three decades since.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/li>\n Those who married in the 2000s are so far divorcing at even lower rates.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/li>\n If current trends continue, nearly two-thirds of marriages will never involve a divorce<\/strong>, according to data from Justin Wolfers, a University of Michigan economist.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/li>\n Of college-educated people who married in the early 2000s, only about 11 percent divorced<\/strong> by their seventh anniversary, the last year for which data is available.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/li>\n Ultimately, a long view is likely to show that the rapid rise in divorce during the 1970s and early 1980s was an anomaly. <\/span><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n Unfortunately, couples in the working class are still divorcing at rates close to the 70s\/80s peak. But overall, marriage in the modern world is quite robust, and seems to be getting stronger, rather than weaker.<\/p>\n\n
