He is reflecting on the fact that when you do battle in chaos, Lady Fortuna and skill have an equal say in the outcome. Pressfield explains this dynamic in his equally worthwhile non-fiction work, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/B004S7JHY6\/ref%3Das_li_ss_tl?ie=UTF8&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=390957&amp;creativeASIN=B004S7JHY6&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;tag=stucosuccess-20\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em>The<\/em> <\/a><em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/B004S7JHY6\/ref%3Das_li_ss_tl?ie=UTF8&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=390957&amp;creativeASIN=B004S7JHY6&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;tag=stucosuccess-20\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Warrior Ethos<\/a>:<\/em><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cIn the era before gunpowder, all killing was of necessity done hand to hand. For a Greek or Roman warrior to slay his enemy,&nbsp;<strong>he had to get so close that there was an equal chance that the enemy\u2019s sword or spear would kill him. This produced an ideal of manly virtue<\/strong>&nbsp;<strong>\u2013&nbsp;<em>andreia,&nbsp;<\/em>in Greek \u2013 that prized valor and honor as highly as victory.<\/strong>\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><em>Andreia <\/em>meant that judgment was based on actions taken &#8212; not outcomes. Society understood that the outcome was, at least in part, in the hands of the gods. What <em>was <\/em>in a man&#8217;s control was how he acted.<\/p>\n<p>We tend to mix this up. There is an army of authors studying \u201csuccessful\u201d people and writing lists of 5, 7, 10, or 20 things that they did to become successful. All you have to do is emulate the list and you, too, can be successful.<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s like looking at the living Spartan soldiers and explaining why they survived. Leonidas would laugh at their idiotic arrogance.<\/p>\n<p>We have become so focused on results that our actions have become a secondary concern. We judge men based on what they <em>have<\/em> instead of what they <em>do<\/em>. We <em>signal <\/em>our ideals instead of embracing them.<\/p>\n<p>In his short book <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Do-Work-Steven-Pressfield-ebook\/dp\/B00NK0MJBK\/ref=as_li_ss_tl?ie=UTF8&amp;qid=1510769416&amp;sr=8-1&amp;keywords=do+the+work&amp;linkCode=sl1&amp;tag=artofmanliness03-20&amp;linkId=f269a0c6c5a40887fbd0c927faaf5fd2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em>Do the Work<\/em><\/a>, Pressfield relates a <em>New Yorker<\/em> cartoon that cleverly skewers our preference for thinking about things, rather than doing them:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cA perplexed person stands before two doors. One door says HEAVEN. The other says BOOKS ABOUT HEAVEN.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>He\u2019s perplexed. He\u2019s <em>considering<\/em> the book. It\u2019s funny because it\u2019s absurd\u2026 and because we know we\u2019d have the same consideration.<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s where we are as a culture. We run desperately to abstraction and avoid action at all costs. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.goodreads.com\/quotes\/8202-the-mass-of-men-lead-lives-of-quiet-desperation-what\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Thoreau\u2019s man of \u201cquiet desperation\u201d<\/a> has never been so prevalent.<\/p>\n<p>The world is full of men who are \u201cstuck\u201d in life. There has been some mass paralysis. Modern man has forgotten how to take action.<\/p>\n<p>The culture is beginning to shift, though. The popularity of Nassim Taleb and his <em>Incerto <\/em>series, beginning with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/B001FA0W5W\/ref%3Das_li_ss_tl?ie=UTF8&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=390957&amp;creativeASIN=B001FA0W5W&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;tag=stucosuccess-20\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em>Fooled by Randomness<\/em><\/a>, has brought an appreciation of randomness to a large segment of society. As we\u2019ll see soon, a focus on action is dominating the business world as well.<\/p>\n<p>The economist and author of <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/B00C1N5WOI\/ref%3Das_li_ss_tl?ie=UTF8&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=390957&amp;creativeASIN=B00C1N5WOI&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;tag=stucosuccess-20\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Average is Over<\/a>,<\/em> Tyler Cowen, agrees:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cThe more information that\u2019s out there, the greater the returns to just being willing to sit down and apply yourself. Information isn\u2019t what\u2019s scarce; it\u2019s the willingness to do something with it.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>A world that is increasingly confused, uncertain, and paralyzed is calling out for men of action. We need to stop thinking and start acting. Stop looking at the big red button and push it. Stop planning and take a step forward. Stop talking about grit and take a hit.<\/p>\n<p>In short, the world needs men. I\u2019m not sure if you\u2019ll answer the call. I <em>do<\/em> know some will, though, and that\u2019s all we need. I\u2019ll be out there, too. You\u2019ll probably find me facedown in failure. Action is Cheaper Than Planning<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Do you know why the Wright Bros. beat out all the mega-corporations they were competing with in the race to taking the first flight? Action.<\/p>\n<p>Robert Greene explains in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/0670024961\/ref%3Das_li_ss_tl?ie=UTF8&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=390957&amp;creativeASIN=0670024961&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;tag=stucosuccess-20\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em>Mastery<\/em><\/a> that the Wright Bros. had a tight budget and were forced to make small, cheap tweaks to each model. They would fly a plane, crash it, tweak it, and fly it again quickly.<\/p>\n<p>The corporations had budgets that allowed them to go back to the drawing board (i.e. abstraction) with each failure. They spent a ton of money and time on each redesign.<\/p>\n<p>The Wright Bros. had a hundred test flights in the time it took these big corporations to complete a handful. Every test flight taught lessons \u2013 the one who failed fastest gathered the most information.<\/p>\n<p>This philosophy of failing fast has spread through Silicon Valley and beyond thanks to Eric Ries\u2019 work <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/B004J4XGN6\/ref%3Das_li_ss_tl?ie=UTF8&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=390957&amp;creativeASIN=B004J4XGN6&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;tag=stucosuccess-20\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">The Lean Startup<\/a>. <\/em>We can imagine the Wright Bros. writing this passage from Ries\u2019 book:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cI\u2019ve come to believe that learning is the essential unit of progress for startups. The effort that is not absolutely necessary for learning what customers want can be eliminated. I call this <em>validated learning <\/em>because it is always demonstrated by positive improvements in the startup\u2019s core metrics.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Technology has reached a point where building is often cheaper than planning. We can build the thing and <em>know <\/em>the answer before we can plan for all the possibilities and determine how it <em>might <\/em>work. Ries writes:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cThe question is not \u2018Can this product be built?\u2019 In the modern economy, almost any product that can be imagined can be built. The more pertinent questions are \u2018Should this product be built?\u2019 and \u2018Can we build a sustainable business around this set of products and services?\u2019&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>These are questions that cannot be answered in the abstract \u2013 they must be tested in the physical world.<\/p>\n<p>The key is to make the tests cheap and quickly make small improvements.<\/p>\n<p>This applies to everything. Especially your life.<\/p>\n<p>Planning has paralyzed me time and again. I was taught to always have a plan before taking action.<\/p>\n<p>That led to a deep depression. I didn\u2019t know what career I wanted to dedicate my life to and so I did nothing. I didn\u2019t know what girl I wanted to marry and so I didn\u2019t give any a real chance. I didn\u2019t know what fitness plan was the best and so I stayed out of the gym.<\/p>\n<p>Now I do the opposite.<\/p>\n<p>I don\u2019t let myself plan or research <em>until <\/em>I\u2019ve taken action.<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019ve tried a ton of careers and found which I hate and which I love. I\u2019ve let myself love the imperfect girl and have the best relationship I\u2019ve ever had. I\u2019m not allowed to read anything about fitness until I\u2019ve worked out that day. I don\u2019t let myself learn about a new diet until I\u2019ve stopped eating sugar.<\/p>\n<p>Most of the time, planning is procrastination. It\u2019s based on theory. It\u2019s going to be wrong.<\/p>\n<p>Plans are useless without action.<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s why Step 1 is to&nbsp;<em>take action based on what you already know. <\/em>Then <em>improve bit by bit. <\/em>Then <em>begin forming a plan.<\/em><\/p>\n<h3><strong>2. Action Allows Emergence<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Taking action creates possibilities that didn\u2019t exist before.<\/p>\n<p>We always look out at our future from the place we\u2019re standing. Yet we forget that this is only one spot.<\/p>\n<p>Imagine walking in New York City. All you can see are skyscrapers, neurotic humans, and taxis. You turn down the next street and you\u2019re looking out into the trees of Central Park.<\/p>\n<p>A completely new possibility has emerged.<\/p>\n<p>If you\u2019re obese then you&nbsp;probably don&#8217;t see&nbsp;a possible future where you\u2019re fit. But, after three months of working out and eating well there will be a possible future of physical fitness that didn\u2019t exist before.<\/p>\n<p>These possibilities seem to \u201ccome out of nowhere\u201d but they actually come out of action.<\/p>\n<p>If you\u2019ve only failed then it\u2019s impossible to see the possibility of success. The trick is to keep trying. That next step might be the key to a better future &#8212; you just can\u2019t see around the corner yet.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>3. Inaction is Scarier<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>The pain of action is acute. It\u2019s right in our face.<\/p>\n<p>Inaction tempts us because it\u2019s slow.<\/p>\n<p>We don\u2019t consider refusing to choose to be a choice. We think we\u2019re safe if we don\u2019t expose ourselves to failure. We don\u2019t appreciate the consequences of inaction because they are slow, chronic, and less obvious. That\u2019s what makes them worse.<\/p>\n<p>You don\u2019t get to escape pain.<\/p>\n<p>The pain that comes with action is acute, gives you scars, and makes you grow.<\/p>\n<p>The pain that comes from inaction is low-grade, makes you soft, and makes you decay.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>4. Motivation Follows Action<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>I had zero motivation when I began writing this. I had nothing to say. I wrote a book about action but for some reason I couldn\u2019t think of the words to tell you.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s 1,600 words later now and I can\u2019t stop thinking of new things to say.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s always like this.<\/p>\n<p>I don\u2019t feel like working out until I\u2019ve been at the gym for 15 minutes. I\u2019m too tired to have sex until we\u2019ve started. I don\u2019t want to go to the party until I\u2019m there.<\/p>\n<p>Motivation (and passion) will follow you if you have the balls to go without them.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>5. Action is an Existential Answer<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>I\u2019m a professional when it comes to existential crises. I\u2019ve spent a large portion of my life in &#8220;what is the meaning of my life?&#8221;&nbsp;mode<em>. <\/em>I\u2019ve come up with a lot of clever answers. Some of them even felt original.<\/p>\n<p>The only one that ever really works is disappointingly simple: <em>do something.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The meaning of my life cannot be summed up in a pithy quote or even the most complete philosophy.<\/p>\n<p><strong>It is impossible to give yourself a satisfying purpose in the abstract.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>It is only in the flow of action that life can make sense. We gave out some of the best content online and never asked for anything in return.<\/p>\n<p>We didn\u2019t believe that what we had was worth anything.<\/p>\n<p>Intellectually we knew that we deserved to be paid. We sold more courses than we ever thought we would and, in the process, made more money in a single night than we did in the previous year.<\/p>\n<p>Forcing ourselves into a corner made us ballsier than we thought we could be.<\/p>\n<p>People were amazed at how cheap we offered our course.<\/p>\n<p>Our fake courage became real. Now we <em>know in our bones <\/em>that we can deliver value to people in a way that they are grateful to pay for it. We <em>know <\/em>that we are delivering something worthwhile.<\/p>\n<p>Now I\u2019m looking for the next corner. What\u2019s the next abyss to jump into? What is something else I \u201cknow\u201d I\u2019m capable of but don\u2019t <em>know<\/em> I\u2019m capable of?<\/p>\n<h3><strong>7. Explanations Follow Actions<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Neuroscientist David Eagleman told the participants of a 2004 study to, \u201cMove your finger when the impulse grabs you.\u201d He reports on his findings in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/B004J4WK9W\/ref%3Das_li_ss_tl?ie=UTF8&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=390957&amp;creativeASIN=B004J4WK9W&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;tag=stucosuccess-20\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em>Incognito: The Secret Lives of the Brain:<\/em><\/a><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cLong before a voluntary movement is enacted, a buildup of neural activity can be measured. The &#8216;readiness potential&#8217; is larger when subjects judge the time of their urge to move, rather than the movement itself.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>They made the choice before they were conscious of it.<\/p>\n<p>Earlier in the book he reports on the findings of a study on people playing a gambling game:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cThe interesting part came when I interviewed the players afterward. I asked them what they\u2019d done in the gambling game and why they\u2019d done it. I was surprised to hear all types of baroque explanations, such as &#8216;The computer liked it when I switched back and forth&#8217; and &#8216;The computer was trying to punish me, so I switched my game plan.&#8217; In reality, the players\u2019 descriptions of their own strategies did not match what they had actually done, which turned out to be highly predictable. Nor did their descriptions match the computer\u2019s behavior, which was purely formulaic. Instead, <strong>their conscious minds, unable to assign the task to a well-oiled zombie system, desperately sought a narrative.&#8221;<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>This urge of ours to create cohesive stories where none exist is called the narrative fallacy.<\/p>\n<p>Knowing you have this need should help you act freely when no story exists. Or at least realize that the story you\u2019re telling yourself is probably wrong. Nassim Taleb makes this suggestion in <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/B00139XTG4\/ref%3Das_li_ss_tl?ie=UTF8&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=390957&amp;creativeASIN=B00139XTG4&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;tag=stucosuccess-20\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">The Black Swan<\/a>:<\/em><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201c<strong>The way to avoid the ills of the narrative fallacy is to favor experimentation over storytelling, experience over history, and clinical knowledge over theories.<\/strong> . . . Being empirical does not mean running a laboratory in one\u2019s basement: <strong>it is just a mind-set that favors a certain class of knowledge over others.<\/strong> I do not forbid myself from using the word <em>cause, <\/em>but the causes I discuss are either bold speculations (presented as such) or the result of experiments, not stories.&nbsp;<strong>Another approach is to predict and keep a tally of the predictions.\u201d<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>When we <em>know<\/em> our stories are probably wrong we can give them less power. Don\u2019t let your scary stories paralyze you. Act and let the narrative follow (just as courage and motivation do).<\/p>\n<h3><strong>8. Action Beats the Odds<\/strong><\/h3>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cSpartans do not ask how many are the enemy but where are they.\u201d \u2013Plutarch, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/B002RI9WSY\/ref%3Das_li_ss_tl?ie=UTF8&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=390957&amp;creativeASIN=B002RI9WSY&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;tag=stucosuccess-20\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em>Sayings of the Spartans<\/em><\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>More information rarely helps unless you are ready to act on it. The perfect plan doesn\u2019t exist.<\/p>\n<p>The great Warren Buffett biography <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/B009MYD9F8\/ref%3Das_li_ss_tl?ie=UTF8&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=390957&amp;creativeASIN=B009MYD9F8&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;tag=stucosuccess-20\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em>The&nbsp;Snowball <\/em><\/a>shows that Buffett had no grand plan when he was younger. He just knew that he wanted to make a lot of money. There was no early master plan, just a powerful urge and the willingness to take opportunities as they came.<\/p>\n<p>The uber-successful venture capitalist Ben Horrowitz says in his new book <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/B00DQ845EA\/ref%3Das_li_ss_tl?ie=UTF8&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=390957&amp;creativeASIN=B00DQ845EA&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;tag=stucosuccess-20\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em>The Hard Things About Hard Things <\/em><\/a>that:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cStartup CEOs should not play the odds. When you are building a company, <strong>you must believe there is an answer and you cannot pay attention to your odds of finding it.<\/strong> You just have to find it. It matters not whether your chances are nine in ten or one in a thousand; your task is the same.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>You don\u2019t need to know if it will work (you probably <em>can\u2019t <\/em>know), you need to try and find out.<\/p>\n<p>Your obstacles are yours to face. It doesn\u2019t matter how they compare to the obstacles in history or those of your peers. It\u2019s a waste of time to consider anything except how you will overcome them.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>9. Action Makes You Humble<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Teenagers think they know everything because they haven\u2019t tested their mettle. They don\u2019t know anything and so they feel like they know everything. They are just beginning to learn about theories and possibilities. They haven\u2019t <em>done<\/em> anything so they feel like they can do anything.<\/p>\n<p>In <em>Gates of Fire, <\/em>an older warrior, Dienekes, addresses a younger:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cMy wish for you, Kalistos, is that you survive as many battles in the flesh as you already have fought in your imagination. Perhaps then you will acquire the humility of a man and bear yourself no longer as the demigod you presume yourself to be.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Action carries the potential to bring imagination and reality together. But only when taken consistently and powerfully.<\/p>\n<p>After the young realize they can\u2019t do <em>everything<\/em> they become disillusioned. They stop trying <em>anything. <\/em>They fall into inaction.<\/p>\n<p>This is why most adults end up so dull. They don\u2019t do anything because it\u2019s probably going to fail. <strong>They mistook early failures for a sign that they should stop trying.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s why they\u2019re bored, depressed, and lethargic.<\/p>\n<p>Instead, our failures should strengthen us. We should recognize that failures are how we learn and grow.<\/p>\n<p>Just ask, &#8220;<em>What would Leonidas think?&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<h3><strong>10. Action Isn\u2019t Petty<\/strong><\/h3>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cSuckers try to win arguments, nonsuckers try to win.\u201d \u2013Nassim Taleb<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Action isn\u2019t concerned with opinions, it\u2019s dedicated to reality.<\/p>\n<p>Action doesn\u2019t leave room for gossip.<\/p>\n<p>Action couldn\u2019t be small if it tried.<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>Practicing Action<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-40333 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/content.artofmanliness.com\/uploads\/2014\/05\/camp.jpg\" alt=\"Vintage soldiers jumping over wooden fence at bootcamp.\" width=\"500\" height=\"413\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Here we will explore (briefly!) two&nbsp;specific ways you can train yourself to take more action.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>I. Systems Over Goals<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Nassim Taleb offers an explanation to the mental perils of non-linear rewards in <em>Fooled by Randomness:<\/em><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cOur brain is not cut out for nonlinearities. People think that if, say, two variables are causally linked, then a steady input in one variable should <em>always <\/em>yield a result in the other one. <strong>Our emotional apparatus is designed for linear causality.<\/strong> For instance, you study every day and learn something in proportion to your studies. If you do not feel that you are going anywhere, your emotions will cause you to become demoralized. But <strong>reality rarely gives us the privilege of a satisfying linear positive progression: You may study for a year and learn nothing, then, unless you are disheartened by the empty results and give up, something will come to you in a flash.<\/strong> . . This summarizes why there are routes to success that are nonrandom, but few, very few, people have the mental stamina to follow them. . . <strong>Most people give up before the rewards.\u201d<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>If you train yourself to be emotionally rewarded for actions taken rather than outcomes you may be able to lengthen the time you can spend in active \u201cfailure\u201d and increase your chances of success.<\/p>\n<p>A possible solution is to reward yourself for following your system rather than achieving a specific outcome. Select a system you know will lead to success and follow it.<\/p>\n<p>Eating right vs. losing 20 pounds. Building a business vs. achieving financial independence. Going on dates vs. having a successful relationship. The first are systems, the second are goals.<\/p>\n<p>Scott Adams, the creator of \u201cDilbert,&#8221; champions this idea in <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/B00COOFBA4\/ref%3Das_li_ss_tl?ie=UTF8&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=390957&amp;creativeASIN=B00COOFBA4&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;tag=stucosuccess-20\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">How to Fail at Almost Everything and Still Win Big<\/a>:<\/em><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cGoal-oriented people exist in a state of continuous pre-success failure at best, and permanent failure at worst if things never work out. <strong>Systems people succeed every time they apply their systems,<\/strong> in the sense that they did what they intended to do. <strong>The goals people are fighting the feeling of discouragement at each turn. <\/strong>The systems people are feeling good every time they apply their system. That\u2019s a big difference in terms of maintaining your personal energy in the right direction.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>When I set a goal of \u201c210 pounds and 13% body fat\u201d I stopped going to the gym and began eating stupid amounts of ice cream. When I decided on the system of \u201cwork out every day\u201d I began a real path to fitness success.<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s the easy step. The next is the real challenge.<br \/>\n<a name=\"inputdeprivation\"><\/a><\/p>\n<h3><strong>II. Input Deprivation Week<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Go an entire week with zero information consumption.<\/p>\n<p>I first tried this last year and it was wildly successful. I got more done in one week than I had in the <em>month <\/em>prior. I also ate the best I had all year and solidified my meditation practice. It was so effective I offered it up to the readers of my blog, <a href=\"https:\/\/startupbros.com\/\">StartupBros<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Most of the people mocked me or called me naive. A few actually tried it, though. And many of them are still practicing it to this day. It\u2019s the most effective way I\u2019ve found to boost output.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s also the most painful.<\/p>\n<p>You are going to, for an entire week, live without information input.<\/p>\n<p>Stay with me on this.<\/p>\n<p>For one week:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>No reading books.<\/li>\n<li>No reading blogs.<\/li>\n<li>No reading newspapers.<\/li>\n<li>No going on Facebook (even just to post).<\/li>\n<li>No watching TV (shows, sports, news, anything).<\/li>\n<li>No watching movies.<\/li>\n<li>No listening to talk radio.<\/li>\n<li>No going on Reddit.<\/li>\n<li>No going on Twitter.<\/li>\n<li>No information input &#8211;&nbsp;only output!<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>You must force yourself to spend an entire week with yourself and the people immediately surrounding you.<\/p>\n<p>This will, first and foremost, force you into action by stripping away every activity you run to in order to avoid actually doing the work you know you should be doing.<\/p>\n<p>Besides that, it will increase mindfulness, increase the respect you have for your own ideas, you\u2019ll have more ideas, unsolvable life problems may begin to make sense, you\u2019ll have an increased appreciation for the news that actually matters, you\u2019ll become more social, you\u2019ll gain perspective, and you\u2019ll become more original.<\/p>\n<p>It sounds too good to be true but it\u2019s not. It\u2019s what happens. The only way for you to appreciate this is to <em>do <\/em>it.<\/p>\n<p>When I <a href=\"https:\/\/startupbros.com\/input-deprivation-week-forcing-action-by-killing-information-addictions\/\">first suggested<\/a> Input Deprivation Week I provided the following 5 steps to start strong, and they still work just as well:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/chrome.google.com\/webstore\/detail\/stayfocusd\/laankejkbhbdhmipfmgcngdelahlfoji?hl=en\">Install StayFocusd<\/a>&nbsp;<\/strong>or its equivalent and put all your time-sucking websites on there. ALL of them! Facebook, Twitter, MySpace (??), reddit, Digg (??), Chive, EVERYTHING!<\/li>\n<li><strong>Delete your consumption apps.<\/strong> I deleted Facebook, Pulse, and Twitter off my phone. Delete the apps that you reflexively go to when you have a minute of free time.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Move your books and magazines.&nbsp;<\/strong>They will just taunt you if they\u2019re sitting on your bedstand or at your desk. Make a stack and put it out of sight.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Carry a notebook with you.&nbsp;<\/strong>You\u2019re going to begin having ideas pop up in your head; make notes of them. I like notepads more than phones because we associate them with creating instead of consuming. It\u2019s risky to take notes on a smartphone if you\u2019re trying to avoid inputs.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Take the batteries out of your remote.&nbsp;<\/strong>When you have the urge to flick on the TV you\u2019ll have to go get batteries for the remote. This is a barrier to TV that will save your willpower pool from draining as you stare down the remote thinking about all the <em>Game of Thrones<\/em> and <em>Mad Men<\/em> you\u2019re missing.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>This may be the hardest thing you do all year. The benefits may not be obvious on Day 2. By Day 6 they\u2019ll be undeniable.<\/p>\n<p>Your focus will turn to production instead of consumption. You will become a giver instead of a taker. You will see your addiction to novelty and useless information plainly.<\/p>\n<p>Remember that this is <em>only <\/em>a week and <em>not <\/em>a suggestion for a lifestyle. I <em>love <\/em>books. I love learning new things. I consume information like crazy. And it\u2019s valuable! Input Deprivation Week is about creating a better relationship with information, not denying its importance.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Like a girlfriend that you didn\u2019t fully appreciate until she was gone, your relationship to information will be forever changed.<\/strong> You will appreciate quality information and be more able to ignore the rest.
