Sawhorses are great for setting up a temporary workspace, out-feed (on my table saw), and more. Now you can slap some sawhorses together pretty quickly and they&#8217;ll work just fine; Brett shared <a title=\"How to Build a Quick and Easy Sawhorse\" href=\"https:\/\/www.artofmanliness.com\/articles\/how-to-build-a-quick-and-easy-sawhorse\/\">a fast and easy sawhorse design<\/a> awhile back if you&#8217;re looking for something nice and simple. But I didn&#8217;t want to compromise on features. So I scoured the internet for ideas, and eventually decided on this design called the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lumberjocks.com\/projects\/16736\">Shopdog.<\/a><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" title=\"image1\" src=\"https:\/\/content.artofmanliness.com\/uploads\/\/2012\/07\/image1.jpg\" alt=\"DIY homemade wooden sawhorse workshop project.\" width=\"375\" height=\"500\"\/><\/p>\n<p>These are not the easiest sawhorses to build. However, they are extremely strong, durable, collapsible and versatile. The versatility comes from the fact that the cross member can be modified depending on the application. For instance, cutting V notches into the top makes it easy to support round pipe. Stapling carpet over the top is perfect for protecting woodworking projects. Best of all, if the cross member gets messed up, all you have to do is swap in a new piece of 2&#215;4. I&#8217;m confident that you won&#8217;t find a better workshop sawhorse anywhere else. Now here&#8217;s how to build &#8217;em.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Tools &amp; Materials List<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>These are the tools and materials I used to build the sawhorses. The total cost for each sawhorse is less than $20, and a big chunk of that is for the locking tie-down. If you can find a suitable alternative, I&#8217;ll bet you can get the price tag under $15 which is cheaper than most of what you&#8217;ll find at the Big Box stores!<\/p>\n<p><strong>The Shopping List<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>(3) 8 foot 2&#215;4&#8217;s<\/li>\n<li>(2) 3\/8&#8243; x 3-1\/2&#8243; carriage bolts<\/li>\n<li>(6) 3\/8&#8243; washers<\/li>\n<li>(2) 3\/8&#8243; nuts<\/li>\n<li>(10) 2-1\/2&#8243; wood screws<\/li>\n<li>(1) 6&#8242; locking tie-down<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Tools<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Compound miter saw (must be capable of bevel and miter cuts)<\/li>\n<li>Jigsaw (or handsaw)<\/li>\n<li>Drill\/driver<\/li>\n<li>Square<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><strong>Step 1: Cut the Lumber for Individual Components<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>To keep these instructions as clear as possible, I&#8217;ve labeled a couple of pictures and listed the necessary cuts. Remember that you&#8217;ll need to cut miter and bevel angles on the top <em>and<\/em> bottom of each piece while maintaining a consistent length. All my legs measure 40&#8243; long, but you can change that to whatever length you prefer.<\/p>\n<p>The cuts I list below assume the work piece is on the right-hand side of the miter saw, same-side up.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Leg 1 &amp; 3 Top:<\/strong> 25\u00b0 miter right, 10\u00b0 bevel right<\/li>\n<li><strong>Leg 1 &amp; 3 Bottom: <\/strong>25\u00b0 miter right, 10\u00b0 bevel left<\/li>\n<li><strong>Leg 2 &amp; 4 Top:<\/strong> 25\u00b0 miter left, 10\u00b0 bevel right<\/li>\n<li><strong>Leg 2 &amp; 4 Bottom:<\/strong> 25\u00b0 miter left, 10\u00b0 bevel left<\/li>\n<li><strong>Lower Supports:<\/strong> 32&#8243; and 28&#8243; long with 10\u00b0 miter cuts on both sides<\/li>\n<li><strong>Upper Support:<\/strong> 24-1\/2&#8243; long with 10\u00b0 miter cuts on both sides<\/li>\n<li><strong>Cross Member:<\/strong> 36&#8243; long, straight cut on both sides.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-25815 size-full\" title=\"image2\" src=\"https:\/\/content.artofmanliness.com\/uploads\/2012\/07\/image2.jpg\" alt=\"DIY homemade sawhorse for woodworking projects diagram.\" width=\"373\" height=\"500\"\/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-25816 size-full\" title=\"image3\" src=\"https:\/\/content.artofmanliness.com\/uploads\/\/2012\/07\/image3.jpg\" alt=\"DIY homemade sawhorse for woodworking projects diagram.\" width=\"373\" height=\"500\"\/><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_25817\" style=\"width: 510px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-25817\" class=\"wp-image-25817 size-full\" title=\"image4\" src=\"https:\/\/content.artofmanliness.com\/uploads\/2012\/07\/image4.jpg\" alt=\"DIY homemade wooden sawhorse legs done on floor.\" width=\"500\" height=\"332\"\/><p id=\"caption-attachment-25817\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Once the legs are cut, they should look like this.<\/p><\/div>\n<h3><strong>Step 2: Cut the Notch<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>The cross-member needs to sit parallel to the ground (for optimal support), and that requires making a compound cut to notch each leg. Unfortunately, you can&#8217;t complete the notch with just a miter saw, and here&#8217;s where the jigsaw come into play. If you&#8217;re looking closely, you&#8217;ll notice the cross member sits proud (higher than the legs) and this is because that little extra space helps protect the legs from saw blades.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-25818 size-full\" title=\"image5\" src=\"https:\/\/content.artofmanliness.com\/uploads\/2012\/07\/image5.jpg\" alt=\"DIY homemade sawhorse notch cut for top.\" width=\"500\" height=\"332\"\/><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_25819\" style=\"width: 385px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-25819\" class=\"wp-image-25819 size-full\" title=\"image6\" src=\"https:\/\/content.artofmanliness.com\/uploads\/2012\/07\/image6.jpg\" alt=\"DIY homemade wooden sawhorse measuring angles.\" width=\"375\" height=\"500\"\/><p id=\"caption-attachment-25819\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">First, mark your cut on the &#8220;inside&#8221; of each leg. The first line will be straight down and perpendicular to the top edge. Mark the line by setting your square on the top of the leg and scribe a line starting at the corner. Be careful as the depth of this cut is different on each side and you don&#8217;t want to cut too deep.<\/p><\/div>\n<div id=\"attachment_25826\" style=\"width: 510px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-25826\" class=\"wp-image-25826 size-full\" title=\"image13\" src=\"https:\/\/content.artofmanliness.com\/uploads\/\/2012\/07\/image13.jpg\" alt=\"DIY homemade wooden sawhorse cutting with jigsaw.\" width=\"500\" height=\"332\" srcset=\"https:\/\/content.artofmanliness.com\/uploads\/2012\/07\/image13.jpg 500w, https:\/\/content.artofmanliness.com\/uploads\/2012\/07\/image13-320x212.jpg 320w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-25826\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The second cut needs to be done with a jigsaw, and I used some scrap for additional support. Again, be careful because the depth is different on either side, and you&#8217;ll need to angle the saw to complete the cut.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Notch all four legs on their inside edge using the same technique.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Step 3: Drill Bolt Holes<\/strong><\/h3>\n<div id=\"attachment_25827\" style=\"width: 385px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-25827\" class=\"wp-image-25827 size-full\" title=\"image14\" src=\"https:\/\/content.artofmanliness.com\/uploads\/\/2012\/07\/image14.jpg\" alt=\"DIY homemade wooden sawhorse drilling carriage bolt.\" width=\"375\" height=\"500\" srcset=\"https:\/\/content.artofmanliness.com\/uploads\/2012\/07\/image14.jpg 375w, https:\/\/content.artofmanliness.com\/uploads\/2012\/07\/image14-320x427.jpg 320w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 375px) 100vw, 375px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-25827\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Next, you need to drill a hole for the carriage bolt which acts as a hinge to collapse the sawhorse. Drill the hole 6&#8243; down, centered on the 2&#215;4. I found it easiest to drill through both legs at the same time. In order to position the legs correctly, put a piece of scrap 2&#215;4 in the notch.<\/p><\/div>\n<h3><strong>Step 4: Insert the Carriage Bolts and Washers<\/strong><\/h3>\n<div id=\"attachment_25828\" style=\"width: 510px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-25828\" class=\"wp-image-25828 size-full\" title=\"image15\" src=\"https:\/\/content.artofmanliness.com\/uploads\/\/2012\/07\/image15.jpg\" alt=\"DIY homemade wooden sawhorse installing carriage bolt.\" width=\"500\" height=\"332\" srcset=\"https:\/\/content.artofmanliness.com\/uploads\/2012\/07\/image15.jpg 500w, https:\/\/content.artofmanliness.com\/uploads\/2012\/07\/image15-320x212.jpg 320w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-25828\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Slide the carriage bolts through with two washers in-between the legs to allow them swing. Put on a third washer next to the nut, and tighten it (but not too tight).<\/p><\/div>\n<h3><strong>Step 5: Attach Cross Supports Using Wood Screws<\/strong><\/h3>\n<div id=\"attachment_25829\" style=\"width: 385px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-25829\" class=\"wp-image-25829 size-full\" title=\"image16\" src=\"https:\/\/content.artofmanliness.com\/uploads\/\/2012\/07\/image16.jpg\" alt=\"Vintage attach cross supports using wood screws.\" width=\"375\" height=\"500\" srcset=\"https:\/\/content.artofmanliness.com\/uploads\/2012\/07\/image16.jpg 375w, https:\/\/content.artofmanliness.com\/uploads\/2012\/07\/image16-320x427.jpg 320w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 375px) 100vw, 375px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-25829\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Now it&#8217;s time to attach the three support pieces. I suggest drilling pilot holes to avoid splitting the wood since the screws are so close to the end grain. I placed the lower support 6&#8243; up the leg and the upper support about the same distance down from the top.<\/p><\/div>\n<h3><strong>Step 6: Install the Strap<\/strong><\/h3>\n<div id=\"attachment_25830\" style=\"width: 510px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-25830\" class=\"wp-image-25830 size-full\" title=\"image17\" src=\"https:\/\/content.artofmanliness.com\/uploads\/\/2012\/07\/image17.jpg\" alt=\"DIY homemade wooden sawhorse ratcheting strap secure legs.\" width=\"500\" height=\"332\" srcset=\"https:\/\/content.artofmanliness.com\/uploads\/2012\/07\/image17.jpg 500w, https:\/\/content.artofmanliness.com\/uploads\/2012\/07\/image17-320x212.jpg 320w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-25830\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">To firmly sandwich the cross member between the legs, use a locking strap (or ratcheting strap) to pull the legs tight.<\/p><\/div>\n<h3><strong>Final Thoughts and Pictures<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>I&#8217;ve been using these sawhorses since January, and I love &#8217;em!
