\nHis tackling was ferocious and his bucking was a dream;
\nWhen husky William tucked the ball beneath his brawny arm
\nThey had a special man to ring the ambulance alarm.<\/p>\n
\nFrom goal to goal he whizzed along while fragments strewed the field;
\nAnd there had been a standing bet\u2014which no one tried to call\u2014
\nThat he could gain his distance through a ten-foot granite wall.<\/p>\n
\nThey wept to think that Husky Bill would buck the line no more;
\nNot so with William\u2014in his dreams he saw the field of fame
\nWhere he would buck to glory in the swirl of life’s big game.<\/p>\n
\nGleams ever on our inmost gaze with visions fair and fond;
\nWe see our fondest hopes achieved and on with striving soul
\nWe buck the line and run the ends until we reach the goal.<\/p>\n
\nBill put on steam and dashed into the thickest of the fray;
\nWith eyes ablaze, he sprinted where the laureled highway led\u2014
\nWhen Bill woke up his scalp hung loose and knots adorned his head.<\/p>\n
\nA bill-collector tackled him and threw him for a loss;
\nAnd when he switched his course again and crashed into the line,
\nThe massive guard named failure did a two-step on his spine.<\/p>\n
\nRick-tackle competition tumbled through and blocked the kick;
\nAnd when he tackled at success in one long vicious bound,
\nThe full-back, disappointment, steered his features in the ground.<\/p>\n
\nThe wise old coach, experience, came up and said to him:
\n“Old boy,” spoke he, “the main point now before you win your bout
\nIs keep on bucking failure till you’ve worn the lobster out.<\/p>\n
\nJust put your eye upon the goal and start there, yard by yard;
\nAnd more than all\u2014when you are thrown\u2014or tumbled with a crack\u2014
\nDon’t lie there whining\u2014hustle up\u2014and keep on coming back.<\/p>\n
\nWhen disappointment trips you up or failure barks your shin;
\nKeep coming back\u2014and if at last you lose the game of right
\nLet those who whipped you know at least they, too, have had a fight,<\/p>\n
\nBut hit the line and hit it hard across each rushing play;
\nFor when the One Great Scorer comes to write against your name\u2014
