Lately, as I&#8217;ve gone to switch it on, I&#8217;ve thought, &#8220;Dang, that&#8217;s really dirty . . . how the heck do you clean this thing?&#8221;<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"39\" data-end=\"424\">I decided to find out and get this job done. Below I&#8217;ll share the process, should you need to tackle this chore yourself. It&#8217;s an easy one to put off, but dust buildup doesn\u2019t just look bad \u2014 it hampers performance, spreads allergens, and can shorten the life of the fan.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"39\" data-end=\"424\">Here&#8217;s how to restore a box or floor fan to prime condition (the process is the same for both types).<\/p>\n<h2 data-start=\"705\" data-end=\"727\"><strong data-start=\"705\" data-end=\"725\">Tools &amp; Supplies<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-190207\" src=\"https:\/\/content.artofmanliness.com\/uploads\/2025\/07\/supplies.jpg\" alt=\"A vacuum cleaner, a white basin filled with water, a screwdriver, and a yellow cloth are placed on a patterned floor\u2014essential tools when learning how to clean a box fan effectively.\" width=\"625\" height=\"321\" srcset=\"https:\/\/content.artofmanliness.com\/uploads\/2025\/07\/supplies.jpg 625w, https:\/\/content.artofmanliness.com\/uploads\/2025\/07\/supplies-320x164.jpg 320w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 625px) 100vw, 625px\" \/><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li data-start=\"730\" data-end=\"757\">Phillips-head screwdriver<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"730\" data-end=\"757\">Vacuum with brush attachment or handheld vac<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"730\" data-end=\"757\">Mild dish soap<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"730\" data-end=\"757\">Bucket or large basin<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"730\" data-end=\"757\">Microfiber cloths or old towels<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"730\" data-end=\"757\">Optional: Compressed air or a can of air duster<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 data-start=\"981\" data-end=\"1239\"><strong data-start=\"981\" data-end=\"1013\">Step 1: Unplug It<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p data-start=\"981\" data-end=\"1239\">This should go without saying, but don\u2019t be the guy who gets zapped trying to clean an electric fan while it&#8217;s still plugged in. Use your screwdriver to unscrew the screws, placing them in a small cup so you don\u2019t lose them. If there are also tabs that latch the front grill on, gently pry them apart. It&#8217;s easy to clean the surface of the grill \u2014 the slots in it, not so much. How much time you want to spend on wiping out those tedious gaps is up to you. Rinse with clean water and dry thoroughly with a towel or let air dry.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2081\" data-end=\"2294\">If your blades are non-detachable like mine, you can still wipe them down in place \u2014 just be careful with water near the motor housing.<\/p>\n<p>Do <strong data-start=\"2596\" data-end=\"2603\">not<\/strong> submerge the motor housing. Make sure the blades are secured and spin freely. Reattach the grill and tighten all screws.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3192\" data-end=\"3498\">Plug it in, fire it up, and admire your handiwork (seeing the before and after is surprisingly satisfying). You may hear a noticeable difference in performance with a quieter, smoother airflow (I did).
