Not everyone is a fan of white jeans on <\/span>dudes<\/span>, though. They don\u2019t like how high maintenance they seem \u2014 that you have to keep them clean, since spills and stains will show up prominently on the white fabric. Or t<\/span>hey<\/span> think the look is too bold, too Euro, or too 80s. <\/span><\/p>\n

It\u2019s true that white jeans are<\/span> <\/span>harder<\/span> to keep spotless, but you don\u2019t avoid wearing a white dress shirt just because it\u2019s prone to stains, do you? Just be a little more vigilant. <\/span>The intentionality and non-practicality of white jeans are part of what makes them look a little dressier <\/span>and<\/span> more stylish and refined than blue jeans, which makes them a great choice when you\u2019re putting together a \u201csmart casual\u201d outfit<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n

It\u2019s true <\/span>too<\/span> <\/span>that<\/span> they\u2019re different, but they needn\u2019t be different in a way that conforms to off-putting fashion stereotypes.<\/span><\/p>\n

If you\u2019re an average guy who\u2019s thinking about trying white jeans for the first time, you\u2019ve already summoned up the confidence to wear pants that will draw some extra <\/span>attention,<\/span> and probably don\u2019t want additional attention <\/span>due to the fact that<\/span> you\u2019re not wearing them <\/span>well<\/span><\/em>.<\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n

If you want to wear white jeans in a way that will stand out, but only in a good way, just follow these guidelines:<\/span><\/p>\n

1) Don\u2019t wear them if you\u2019re on the heavier side.<\/span><\/strong> <\/span>Black is slimming<\/span>. White<\/span> is widening.<\/span> White jeans on a big <\/span>dude<\/span> will just enlarge his legs and make him look <\/span>bigger<\/span>. Only wear white jeans if you\u2019re on the trimmer side.<\/span><\/p>\n

2) Choose white jeans with some heft and structure.<\/span><\/strong> There are other white pants out there \u2014 white chinos and trousers. But these are <\/span>even<\/span> harder to pull off than white jeans and can feel too country club and foo-fooey or too much like the garb of the neighborhood ice cream man or an asylum employee. <\/span>It\u2019s<\/span> the texture and structure of white jeans <\/span>that<\/span> tip white pants into pull-off-able territory.<\/span> So lean into that when choosing a pair, opting for ones <\/span>that have<\/span> some heft and structure (and won\u2019t show your underwear).<\/span><\/p>\n

3) Only wear them in the spring and summer.<\/span><\/strong> Some fashion-forward style gurus will tell you you can wear white jeans year-round. And <\/span>it\u2019s true that the \u201cno white after Labor Day\u201d rule has<\/span> loosened in modern times. But white still reads very much as a warmer weather color. If white jeans attract attention in any season, <\/span>they\u2019re going to<\/span> garner some head-scratching stares in the dregs of February. <\/span>So only <\/span>bust them<\/span> out in spring and summer.<\/span> It\u2019s <\/span>actually<\/span> nice to have some seasonal clothes you take out and put away as the year progresses; it\u2019s a hedge against the horror of the same old thing.<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n

4) Wear them with a blue top. <\/span><\/strong>White jeans are a blank canvas; you can pair them with a top in pretty much any color, except white<\/span>; a<\/span> white tee or dress shirt + white jeans creates a look that\u2019s too homogenous<\/span>, <\/span>unless you\u2019re also wearing a colored jacket on top (but then you won\u2019t be able to remove the jacket without turning the outfit into a full-on white-out).<\/span><\/p>\n

While you can pair your white jeans with <\/span>a variety of<\/span> colors, for the most foolproof, eye-pleasing combo, wear them with a blue top. You\u2019re simply inverting your standard <\/span>blue-jeans-on-bottom<\/span>, white-shirt-on-top look.<\/span><\/p>\n

This pairing can <\/span>take the form of<\/span> white jeans + a casual shirt like a blue henley or a blue and white striped tee. A navy polo + white jeans is <\/span>a particularly good<\/span> look.<\/span><\/p>\n

Another can\u2019t-miss combination is white jeans + a blue button-down. Choose a light blue Oxford (you have added an OCBD to your wardrobe, haven\u2019t you?<\/a>) or a denim or chambray shirt. <\/span><\/p>\n

To up the formality level,<\/span> add an unstructured blue sports jacket over your lighter blue button-down.<\/span> A brown <\/span>jacket<\/span> works as well.<\/span><\/p>\n

Once you\u2019ve <\/span>gotten<\/span> more comfortable wearing white jeans, you can branch out to <\/span>different color<\/span> tops.<\/span> Neutral colors (black, brown, gray), earth tones (tan, moss, olive), and pastels (mint green, pink) work well. Black or another solid, bold color does create a starker look, but this kind of color blocking can also draw the viewer\u2019s eye upward, making you appear taller. <\/span><\/p>\n

As far as footwear for any of these get-ups goes, it\u2019s <\/span>fine<\/span> to wear white sneakers, though this monochrome look can create the visual effect of your pants melting into your shoes; if you go white\/white, it\u2019s best if your shoes are a different tone than your pants. Navy canvas sneakers, like Converse, look good when <\/span>you\u2019re wearing your<\/span> white jeans with a blue top. When <\/span>you\u2019re<\/span> wearing a button-down shirt, <\/span>nicer<\/span> sneakers still work for a more casual look, but when you\u2019re trying to smarten the outfit up, opt for chukka boots or loafers. <\/span><\/p>\n
