If you haven\u2019t made one <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.artofmanliness.com\/articles\/beginners-guide-to-edc\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">part of your EDC yet,<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> having perhaps remained unconvinced of its utility, below we list the many ways a pocketknife can come in handy on a daily basis. From making chores easier, to solving minor annoyances, to even saving a life, here are 36 uses for this timeless tool.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Note: Some of the uses listed are suboptimal for a knife and can potentially dull and damage it. Whenever possible, you should use the right tool for the job. But when you don\u2019t have the right tool, and need to improvise in a pinch, a pocketknife can be clutch.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><b>1. Open packages. <\/b>Get at the umpteenth thousandth thing you ordered from Amazon with ease.<\/p>\n<p><b>2. Break down packages.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> When you\u2019re having trouble fitting that umpteenth thousandth Amazon box in your recycling bin, it&#8217;s time to slice through all its tape and fold it up.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>3. Slice fruit.<\/b> Then eat the sliced-off chunk right off the blade. Like a produce-consuming badass.<\/p>\n<p><b>4. Make kindling.<\/b> Pare sticks into more combustible pieces and create shavings for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.artofmanliness.com\/articles\/make-tinder-bundle\/\">a bird\u2019s nest tinder bundle<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><b>5. Cut a seatbelt.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Free yourself or a loved one trapped by a jammed seatbelt inside <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.artofmanliness.com\/articles\/how-to-escape-a-sinking-car-an-illustrated-guide\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a car that\u2019s sinking into a lake<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or going up in flames.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>6. Cut fishing line<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Because tangle-ups happen.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>7. Cut fishing bait. <\/b>Two weems for the price of one.<\/p>\n<p><b>8. Remove splinters.<\/b> Sterilize the blade with alcohol; get digging.<\/p>\n<p><b>9. Remove staples.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> When that claw thing goes missing.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>10.<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.artofmanliness.com\/articles\/a-beginners-guide-to-whittling\/\"><b>Whittle<\/b><\/a><b>.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Carve yourself a nice little duck head to while away the time.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>11. Strip\/cut electrical wire.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> There are official wire strippers\/cutters for this, of course, but a knife will work in a pinch.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>12. Open a wine bottle.<\/b> Takes a bit of finesse compared to a corkscrew; watch <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=5AjbaATxhBE\">a video tutorial <\/a>for the technique.<\/p>\n<p><b>13. Cut open clothes to administer first aid. <\/b>Whether you\u2019re treating an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.artofmanliness.com\/articles\/how-to-treat-an-impalement-wound\/\">impalement injury<\/a> or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.artofmanliness.com\/articles\/how-to-treat-a-gunshot-wound\/\">gunshot wound<\/a>, or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.artofmanliness.com\/articles\/heart-attack-symptoms-what-to-do-cpr-aed\/\">applying AEDs to the chest of a heart attack victim<\/a>, you first need to cut off the victim&#8217;s clothes around where you\u2019ll be administering aid.<\/p>\n<p><b>14. Spread toppings. <\/b>Peanut butter. Jelly. A little smear on a bagel.<\/p>\n<p><b>15. Open clamshell packaging. <\/b>All packaging becomes frustration-free packaging when you open it like a heedless barbarian, stabbing and slashing with abandon.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>16.<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.artofmanliness.com\/articles\/how-to-fillet-a-fish-an-illustrated-guide\/\"><b>Fillet a fish<\/b><\/a><b>.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> For prepping your catch-of-the-day for the campfire frying pan.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>17. Cut off clothing tags.<\/b> You\u2019re driving to work and realize you\u2019ve still got one sticking out of your collar.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b><\/b><b>18. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.artofmanliness.com\/articles\/6-ways-to-sharpen-your-pencils\/\">Sharpen a pencil<\/a><\/b><b>.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> For when you want to feel like a real ar-teest.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>19. Cut through zip ties.<\/b> Which present themselves in packaging or wrapped around cables.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b>20. Clean car battery terminals<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Open a letter.<\/b> It\u2019s rare to get real correspondence these days, but when you do, you want to avoid tearing through the envelope\u2019s return address and contents by slicing it openly neatly.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b><\/b><b>22. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.artofmanliness.com\/articles\/how-to-open-a-can-without-an-opener\/\">Open a can<\/a><\/b><b>. <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When you come upon a cache of delicious peaches during the apocalypse (<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00e0 la<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> father and son in <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/3zMZkTZ\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Road<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) and don\u2019t have an opener.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>23. Cut rope. <\/b>Rope is handy for a variety of things, and sometimes you need to trim it down to size.<\/p>\n<p><b>24. Pry out batteries.<\/b> When they need replacing and are stubbornly stuck.<\/p>\n<p><b>25. Untie a tight knot.<\/b> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.artofmanliness.com\/articles\/how-to-untie-a-tight-knot\/\">Inserting an implement into a knot can get a tight one undone<\/a>; a duller tool works best (you don\u2019t want to cut the rope in the process), but a knife can get the job done too.<\/p>\n<p><b>26. Cut loose threads. <\/b>Those little danglers that mysteriously emerge from your clothes.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b>27. Perform an emergency tracheotomy.<\/b> When someone&#8217;s choking and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.artofmanliness.com\/articles\/how-to-perform-the-heimlich-maneuver-in-6-different-situations\/\">the Heimlich maneuver<\/a> fails, an emergency tracheotomy may be needed, and doctors have indeed successfully performed them, using a pocket knife, in places like <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.kpcc.org\/news\/2013\/09\/25\/39491\/doctors-perform-emergency-tracheotomy-in-bakersfie\/\">restaurants<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=hPlwChqeyIA\">airplanes<\/a> (back when carrying a knife on board was kosher). The whole \u201cbeing a doctor\u201d part of these stories is of course an important consideration here.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b>28. Open a bottle.<\/b> Use either the spine of the knife\u2019s blade or the top scale of its handle to pry it up.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b>29. Cut a new hole in a belt.<\/b> When you\u2019ve gained (or lost) some weight,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.artofmanliness.com\/articles\/how-to-make-a-new-hole-in-a-leather-belt\/\">here\u2019s the technique<\/a> (along with some alternative ways to make a hole in a belt too).<\/p>\n<p><b>30. Fend off a wild animal.<\/b> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newsweek.com\/colorado-mountain-lion-attack-pocketknife-1454975\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This dude<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> fended off a mountain lion attack with his pocketknife; <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/world-us-canada-49186379\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">this guy<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> was able to stop a bear attack using a mere 2-inch blade.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><\/b><b>31. <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.artofmanliness.com\/articles\/mumbley-peg\/\"><b>Play mumbley peg<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Once a popular pastime among 19th century schoolboys, Wild West cowboys, and World War II soldiers<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">; still a viable outdoors entertainment.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>32. Puncture and deflate those plastic packaging pillows.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> You know, the big bubble things you get in all those aforementioned boxes from Amazon.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>33. Unscrew small screws.<\/b> Not the most effective method, but works in a pinch.<\/p>\n<p><b>34. Trim your calluses.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Peel \u2018em like a potato.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>35. Open a coconut.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> There are <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.artofmanliness.com\/articles\/how-to-open-a-coconut\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a variety of ways you can open a coconut<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, including <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=fH3jAuhWPNk\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">using only a small pocket knife<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>36.
