I found this poem in a book on public speaking from 1900. While it was written for young boys, it’s just as applicable to young men. Hard work, dedication, and resiliency are all qualities we should try to develop in our sons and in ourselves.

Boys Wanted<\/p>\n

Boys of spirit, boys of will,
\nBoys of muscle, brain and power,
\nFit to cope with anything,
\nThese are wanted every hour.<\/p>\n

Not the weak and whining drones,
\nWho all troubles magnify;
\nNot the watchword of “I can’t,”
\nBut the nobler one, “I’ll try.”<\/p>\n

Do whate’er you have to do
\nWith a true and earnest zeal;
\nBend your sinews to the taswk,
\n“Put your shoulders to the wheel.”<\/p>\n

Though your duty may be hard,
\nLook not on it as an ill;
\nIf it be an honest task,
\nDo it with an honest will.<\/p>\n

In the workshop, on the farm,
\nAt the desk, where’er you be,
\nFrom your future efforts, boys,
